The University of Groningen is the oldest university in the Netherlands, existing since 1614. Since its founding, it has two Nobel laureates and one astronaut, educated the first female graduate in the Netherlands and hired the first female university lecturer. It is constantly listed on the list of 100 best universities in the world. Thanks to him, every fifth inhabitant of Groningen is a student (the city is inhabited by a total of 250,000 people, of whom 50,000 are students).
The main building of the University of Groningen was erected in 1907-1909 according to the design of Jan Vrijman. This is the third building since the university was founded. The building has three facades - on the central one there is a statue of the goddess Minerva, the nanny of science. Accompanied by Scientia (on the left) and History (on the right). Prudentia (Prudence) took the left facade, and Mathematica the right. The building also has a clock tower with a carillon - a gift from the inhabitants of Groningen.
