Groninger Museum
Local name: Groninger Museum
The Groninger Museum is one of the most interesting contemporary art museums in the Netherlands. It is widely known because of the unusual, color and formally surprising form of the building. The collection is based on the achievements of the famous Dutch group de Ploeg. In addition, it has huge archaeological collections, art and craft of the region, applied art (including the famous local silver products and oriental ceramics).
The facility does not have a permanent exhibition - its activity is based on thematic and problematic presentations of selected parts of the collection, changed many times throughout the year. The Groninger Museum also has an extensive educational offer, which is implemented in well-equipped workshop spaces.
The current Groninger Museum building was built in 1994. It is the work of the Italian architect and designer Alessandro Mendini, who invited many well-known architects to create individual parts of the building, including Philipe Starck, Michele de Lucchi and Coop Himmelb.
