University Museum
Local name: Universiteitsmuseum
Science museum, where the collection of the University of Groningen is kept. The official opening took place in 1934 and since then we can see exhibitions devoted to the broad subject of culture, nature and science connecting them. At the exhibition we will see portraits, instruments, apparatus, documents and many other objects related to science in Groningen.
The beginning of the museum's existence dates back to 1932, and its initiator was the then rector Anton Gerard Ross. University professors and graduates filled the collection with their donations. Initially, the museum was located in Corps de Garde and changed locations until 2004, when as a result of the competition a new project was created for the renovation of the university library building. Today, the entrance to the museum is located at Oude Kijk in 't Jastraat.
The museum collection covers a period of almost four centuries. Every year new exhibits appear, in particular collections of scientific instruments from laboratories and institutes.
