Submarine Tonjin
Local name: Onderzeeboot Tonijn
The Den Helder Maritime Museum consists of several buildings ashore and several ships moored at the quay. Extremely interesting, modern permanent and temporary exhibitions tell about the history of the navy and its technical development. They are presented in two buildings: 't Torentje and Geschutmakerij. The museum has been operating since 1965. It is friendly for children who can take part in lessons and activities organized here.
Ships that are part of the museum exhibition are: Hr. Ms. Tonijn from the 1960s, Zr. Ms. Schorpioen from 1868 and the minesweeper Hr. Ms. Abraham Crijnssen from 1937. The building t Torentje is so called because of the belfry from 1823, whose bell used to indicate the time when the shipyard started and closed. Whereas Geschutmakerij, built in 1825, served as a warehouse. The museum also has the bridge house HNLMS De Ruyter.
