Duklja Ruins

Local name: Duklja ruševine

Duklja (Doclea) are the extensive ruins of an ancient Roman city located near Podgorica. Only fragments of buildings have survived to modern times. You can find the remains of numerous temples, palaces, remains of columns, capitals or cornices. A large part of the city is now underground, and the ruins themselves are quite neglected. Admission is free, and individual building remains are equipped with signs and descriptions.

The city was built in a strategic position - on the area bordering the three river basins and protected by high rocks. It operated in the period from I to the beginning of the 5th century AD, and was inhabited by 8 to 10 thousand people. It was one of the most important shopping centers in the region. It fell shortly after the fall of the Roman Empire as a result of conquest and destruction by the Goths.
