Ta Giezu Church

Local name: Ta' Giezu

Ta 'Giezu Church, or St. Mary's Church, is a Baroque temple, one of the two Franciscan churches in Valletta. The construction started in 1571 according to the Girolamo Cassara project, which personally supervised the construction. The church's facade received its present appearance in 1689 after the reconstruction carried out by Mederico Blondel. The temple is famous for its magnificent 17th-century crucifix, which for believers has the power to do miracles.

The creator of the crucifix was Giovan Francesco Pitorno (1600-1639), better known as Humble's brother from Petralia. He was the son of a carpenter who was educated in the arts and crafts. He became famous for expressive and naturalistic images of the passion of Christ. In the vicinity of Pitorno's work there was a picture of Our Lady of Sorrows by Stefan Erardi.

The temple contains the grave of Nazju Falzon (1813-1865), who devoted himself to catechetical service (he was not ordained a priest), teaching the children of British sailors. In 2001, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
