Valletta Market

Local name: Is-Suq tal-Belt

The nineteenth-century indoor market hall, restored in 2016 and currently still performing its original function. The hall was built on the site of an earlier town market from limestone blocks, which were a popular building material on the island.

Here, iron and cast iron constructions were used, consisting of columns and the entire roof structure, which is supplemented with wood. It was the first building in Malta to use iron on such a scale and was modeled on similar structures from London or Paris.
