The Barakka Lift is an elevator that opened in 2012 and is easily accessible from Grand Harbor to Upper Barrakka Gardens and the center of Valletta. The lift is 58 meters high and transports up to 21 people at a time. The climb takes less than half a minute, which makes the elevator the fastest and most convenient way to overcome the level difference between the wharf and the cliff top.
The new elevator had to meet many restrictive requirements: it had to carry up to 800 passengers per hour, could not lean on historic city fortifications and had to harmoniously fit into the surroundings. The structure designed by the Maltese architect Konrad Buhagiar meets all the conditions - it is one of the few new buildings in Valletta, whose appearance has met with widespread acceptance.
The current elevator was built on the site of an old one, which has been used by tourists and residents of Valletta since 1905. It was turned off after nearly 70 years of operation in 1973, and 10 years later it was decided to dismantle, because the renovation proved to be unprofitable.
