Auberge de Castille

At present, Auberge de Castille is the seat of the Prime Minister of Malta. At the Castile Inn, Joannites from Castile, León and Portugal had their headquarters. The building was designed by Girolam Cassar, a Maltese architect and military engineer, was put into use in 1574. Currently, meetings of the Malta Council of Ministers are taking place.

The Castilian Inn was the most modern of all the eight knight seats that were built according to the designs and under Cassar's personal supervision. He also developed designs for the Grand Master's Palace and the co-cathedral of Saint. Jana in Valletta and Verdala Palace in Siġġiewi. The inn today owes its appearance to a very thorough reconstruction in the years 1741-1745, during which Andrea Belli built a floor and arranged the interior in the Baroque style.

Joannites used the inn to occupy Malta by Napoleon's army. During the British rule, it housed the headquarters, barracks and a radar station.
