The Cathedral Museum in Mdina is considered one of the best church museums in Europe. The collection has many valuable paintings, engravings of Rembrandt, ancient reliquaries and original medieval manuscripts, including records of the Holy Inquisition from the early 15th century. The Cathedral Museum is famous for its rich collection of works by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), considered the greatest artist of the German Renaissance.
The Dürer collection consists of an extensive collection of wood engravings and copper plates. The series Life of the Virgin (series of scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary) and The Small Passion (images of the passion and death of Christ) stand out in it. The collection of several sculptures of apostles made of gold and silver deserves special attention.
The headquarters of the Cathedral Museum is a lavish baroque palace, erected in 1733 on the orders of Archbishop Mdina Paolo Alpheran de Bussana (1728-1757). There was a seminary here - the museum was created in 1969.
