Gharb Church, officially the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a Roman Catholic parish church founded in the years 1699-1729. Gharb Church replaced the "Taż-Żejt" chapel, which for 50 years served as the main temple in Għarb. The new church, consecrated in 1774, became the second collegiate church on the island of Gozo, and since 1967 it has the rank of a minor basilica.
The baroque Gharb Church was modeled on the Roman church of St. Agnieszka, designed by Francesco Borromini. Currently, it is considered one of the most architecturally perfect churches on the island of Gozo. In 2012, he was listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands.
The Taż-Żejt chapel is still in its original place. Her name (in free translation "from olive oil") was derived from the legend of an ailing old woman who was miraculously healed. The woman noticed the oil leaking from the rock - she lubricated her body and got rid of all diseases. A chapel was erected to commemorate this event.
