St. St. Lawrence's Church is a church dedicated to St. Wawrzyniec, already mentioned in the inventory of churches and chapels from 1436. In the temple you can see a picture showing the martyrdom of St. Wawrzyniec by Matti Preti (1613-1699) - an Italian caravaggionist who spent the last decades of his life in Malta. Other works of art include paintings of Stefan Erardi depicting Christ the Savior and crucifixion.
The original church of St. Wawrzyniec already existed when the Knights of the Order of St. John. It became the main temple of the Knights of St. John and performed this role for 40 years, until 1671, when the religious knights moved to the new city - Valletta was just built.
The current building of the church of St. Wawrzyniec dates from 1696. During World War II, the temple was seriously damaged - the dome was completely destroyed. In 1952 the church was rebuilt. It is now considered a historic building and included in the National List of Cultural Properties of the Maltese Islands.
