Malta at War Museum Birgu is housed in 18th-century military barracks. The permanent exhibition presents memorabilia from World War II, including personal items, documents, medals, uniforms and weapons. You can watch newsreels from the period of massive Luftwaffe bombing.
The museum building was erected above the underground rooms, in which hundreds of people found rescue from bombing. The shelters have been restored and are now one of the biggest attractions in the museum's offer. It is also worth watching the movie "Malta GC" - a chronicle from the war and at the same time the first documentary film about Malta.
The museum aims to preserve the memory of the most tragic period in Malta's recent history - bombing raids from 1940-43. The location of the facility is not accidental - it was Birgu that was the most heavily attacked target of German bombers.
