Jurmala is a large and very popular health resort and holiday resort on the shores of the Gulf of Riga. There are mineral springs and mud deposits, and the wide, sandy beach is a great place to relax.
The city consists of several separate settlements of various buildings and character. In some of them you can see 19th century seaside villas and wooden holiday houses. However, post-war buildings dominate when Jurmala was one of the most important holiday resorts of the Soviet Union. Even state leaders such as Khrushchev or Brezhnev came here for rest.
The advantage of Jurmala is a wide and sandy beach lying on the shallow Gulf of Riga quickly warming up in summer. Thanks to this, there are good conditions for sunbathing and swimming in the sea. There is also a small water park in the area.
There are over 50 spa resorts in the city that use local mineral water and mud. Rheumatic, respiratory, cardiological and skin diseases are treated here.
