The basilica is one of the most important and famous monuments of the city. It was founded in 1219 by the will of Cardinal Gual Bicchieri, and its construction was completed in 1227. Architecture combines Romanesque solutions and European Gothic influences. Both the facade and the towers are made of green and gray stone from the vicinity of Orta. Decorated aisles with gothic cross vaults are also noteworthy.
