The medieval sanctuary belongs to the Montecassino Abbey. It was built on the rock of the same name, overlooking the city of Tropea. Initially, the Basilian brothers lived there, and from the 11th century it was occupied by the Benedictines. The building of the sanctuary was destroyed twice as a result of the earthquakes in 1783 and 1905. Therefore, little is left of its original structure.
