The historic gate was built in 1808. It was originally called Porta Ferdinand, in honor of Ferdinand IV Bourbon. Above the arch there is a commemorative plaque commemorating the opening of the gate by this monarch. Just outside the gate is the entrance to the pedestrianized Corso Umberto, extending for 800 meters all the way to the city's second gate, Porta Catania.
