The small island is the historical center of Syracuse. The island, also known as Città Vecchia, contains many ancient monuments, including the Eurialo fortifications, the Temple of Apollo and the cathedral. Ortygia, being an island right on the coast, easily transformed into a natural fortress with ports of significant importance in antiquity.
