The castle was built in the years 1232-1240 by Emperor Frederick II. It has a name that refers to the figure of George Maniakes, a Byzantine general who occupied the city in 1038. Originally, the castle could only be entered through a bridge stretching over the moat. A feature of the castle is a decorated portal. Today, the castle is open to the public and is a local tourist attraction in Syracuse.
