The fortress stands at the top of Sant'Elia Hill and was built in 1359 by order of Pope Innocent VI. Until the mid-18th century, it was the seat of the papal governors and the main personalities of the time. It currently functions as a museum that displays important works of art, frescoes from the first half of the 15th century, as well as rooms, including the Pope's office.
