The Medici Villa is located on the Pincian Hill next to the Trinita dei Monti church in Rome. In 2015, Villa Medici won the competition for the prettiest public park in Italy. The palace is a Renaissance building made according to the plans of the Florentine architect Bartolomeo Ammanati. In front of the entrance there is a fountain bought from the religious of San Salvatore in Lauro. In the building you can visit permanent and temporary exhibitions and apartments. Various cultural events are also held there. The gardens cover 8 hectares of area, where you can see, among others sculpture Dea Roma as a gift of Pope Gregory XIII and a faithful copy of the sculpture of Niobe and her children. The gardens are open to the public.
The palace with the garden complex was founded on the initiative of Cardinal Ferdinand I Medici in the 16th century. Earlier, this place was part of Lukullus' gardens for the vineyard. Since 1803, the building houses the French Academy in Rome. Cardinal Alexander (later Pope Leo XI) was a frequent guest at the villa, and Galileo was imprisoned here after the verdict issued by the Holy Inquisition.
