Palazzo della Cancelleria is the first palace built in the Renaissance style in the Italian capital. On the ground floor of the building you can admire the famous fresco by Giorgio Vasari, which the artist completed in a record time of 100 days. The palace is owned by the Holy See and has been granted extraterritorial status.
Palazzo della Cancelleria was built on the order of Cardinal Raffaele Riario, in the years 1485-1513. Travertine from Pompey's theater located nearby and materials from the Colosseum were used. The design of the palace was created by Leon Battista Alberti. The best architects of this period worked on the construction, including Donato Bramante and Baccio Pontelli.
Originally the building was named Palazzo Riario, after the name of the first owner. However, when the palace became the seat of the Apostolic Chancellery, the name was changed to the one used today.
