Mausoleum of Augustus

Local name: Mausoleo di Augusto

Mausoleo di Augusto is a tomb erected in 28 BC by the emperor Augustus on the Field of Mars in Rome, which is the resting place of the ruler, his family and successors. The mound was surrounded by trees and was about 87 m in diameter. On its top was a bronze statue of the emperor. Inside the embankment there was a chapel for urns with the ashes of the dead.

Marek Klaudiusz Marcellus (died 23 BC) was buried in the mausoleum, the nephew of Augustus. Later, many members of the Julian-Claudian dynasty rested in it: Marek Agrypa, Druzus the Elder, Gaius Caesar and Lucius Caesar, Octavian, Tiberius, Agrippina the Elder and Claudius Neron. The last person whose ashes were laid in the mausoleum was the emperor Nerva (d. 98).

From the 15th century, the building gradually deteriorated. In 1780, a wooden corrida was built at its top, and then it was a place for circus performances, theaters and concerts. In 1937, the mound was subjected to a restaurant combined with archaeological works.
