The Piazza Mazzini gardens in Rome are famous for Renaissance fountains designed by architect Raffaele De Vico. The central part is an octagonal pool with a diameter of 25 meters. On its sides there are four fountains crowned with columns with the image of a Roman eagle with outstretched wings.
Water flows into the pool through small cascades from carved riverbeds surrounded by sea stone fish. Around the pool was arranged a beautiful mosaic depicting the signs of the zodiac, cornucopia, ship sails and sun. Natural multi-colored stones were used to create this composition.
The gardens are the result of De Vico's collaboration with the outstanding sculptor Ermenegildo Luppi. In the past, small models of ships and boats floated on the pool waters, released by children. Today the park is neglected, the mosaic is partly overgrown with grass.
