Church of St. Trinity on the Mount

Local name: Chiesa di San Trinità sul Monte

Trinità dei Monti, or the Church of the Holy Trinity on the Mount, is a Gothic temple with a two-tower facade designed by Carl Maderna. The interior consists of one nave surrounded by six chapels. The works of art gathered here include one of the most famous Roman frescoes, "Removal of the Cross", which was painted in 1541 by a student of Michelangelo, Daniel da Volterra. The famous Spanish Steps designed by Domenic Fontana lead to the church in front of which is the red granite Sallustiano obelisk.

The construction of the temple began in 1502, commissioned by the King of France, Louis XII. The author of the project was Giacomo Della Porta. Situated on the site of a former vineyard on the Pincio hill, the church was intended for French monks. In the years 1530-1570 a monastery was established, which became a well-known center of science and culture. Currently, the building houses a prestigious school.

The church and monastery belong to a French foundation based in Italy, which deals with, among others French-speaking pilgrims who come to Rome. In 2016, the church was handed over to the Emmanuel Community.
