Sant'Eligio degli Orefici is a church of the Roman guild of goldsmiths. It is a perfectly preserved example of Renaissance architecture, it was built in the 16th century. Its interior is decorated with frescoes, one of the most valuable paintings is "Adoration of the Shepherds" by Giovanni de'Vecchi from 1575.
The frescoes in the apse were made by Mateo Pérez de Alesio, while the fresco titled "Adoration of the Magi" is the work of Giovanni Francesco Romanelli. The church contains the tomb of Bernardino Passerio - a papal goldsmith working for Julius II, Leon X and Clement VII.
The design of the temple was created by the architect Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino. He collaborated with Donato Bramante or modeled faithfully on his works (historical sources do not explain it exactly). The building had to be renovated several times because of flooding of nearby Tiber.
