Osimo is a historic city, dating back to ancient times. Fragments of Roman walls and several interesting medieval churches have been preserved here.
The city was founded by Greek colonists, and from the 2nd century BC it was under the control of Rome. The preserved fragments of the defensive walls come from this time. There is also a network of ancient tunnels from the beginning of the first millennium beneath the city. Unfortunately, most of them are not made available to visitors.
During the Middle Ages, the city developed as an important trading center with numerous contacts with the Byzantines. From this period you can see, among others the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, which dates back to the 8th century, and the Basilica of San Giuseppe da Copertino. The relics of the saint are kept there, and the interior of the church has a baroque character.
