Planetarium Ulrico Hoepli

Local name: Civico Planetario Ulrico Hoepli

The public planetarium "Ulrico Hoepli" is located in the Giardini Pubblici Indro Montanelli, which is the eighteenth-century public city gardens. It is the most important and largest unit of this type in Italy. The property is surrounded by enchanting greenery and historic monuments of Giardini Pubblici Indro Monatenelli, i.e. public city gardens from the 18th century

In 1968, the facility was equipped with a Zeiss IV projector, which is still in use. It is used to display not only stars, but also other astronomical objects during screenings on the dome of the building. 300 chairs were prepared for viewers, which fit on an octagonal base with a diameter of 19.6 m. The dome screen was decorated with the panorama of Milan from the moment of opening the object in 1930. The planetarium houses the seat of the most important and oldest amateur astronomical club of Milan - Cricolo Astrofili di Milano.

The planetarium was opened in May 1930. It was designed by Piero Portaluppi, considered one of the greatest architects in Milan. The promoter of science and art and the Italian publisher in one person - Ulrico Hoepeli was the founder of the facility. The architecturally raw building made of natural stones is crowned with a large semicircular dome.

The institution conducts IT, popularizing and teaching activities in the field of astronomy. The Planetarium also has a library that is part of the Natural History Museum. On the observation deck you can admire the panorama of the city.
