Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti
Local name: Battistero di San Giovanni alle Fonti
Located inside:
Milan Cathedral
The San Giovanni alle Fonti Baptistery was one of the first to be established in Milan. Originally found itself on the site of today's Duomo between the churches of Santa Maria Maggiore and Santa Tecla. Established in 378-97 for men. Here, in 387, Bishop Ambrogio baptized Agostino d'Ippona with his son and friends. The remains of the Baptistery were discovered in 1961-1962 during excavations in the Duomo underground. The octagonal pool was 4.5 meters above the floor. The remains of the baptistery can be visited from inside the cathedral. You can see the marble floor and the hole in the center of the water tank, which was probably served by a special channel.
