Marsala is a coastal city in Sicily known for its production of excellent white wine and sea salt. There are also sandy beaches, excellent conditions for kitesurfing and interesting monuments from different eras.
In and around Marsala, there are especially many remains of ancient Carthage. Nowadays, when salt is mined on an industrial scale, its value is quite low, but in the past centuries it was one of the greatest wealth. One of Marsala's most important attractions, Saline della Laguna is an area where salt is evaporated to this day in shallow pools. You can visit the plant with a guide and watch the process closely. Tourists can also visit one of the historic windmills.
The coastal waters around Marsala, and the Marsala Lagoon in particular, are perfect vacation spots. Local sandy beaches such as San Teodoro Beach offer warm sea access and good facilities. It is also a place where you can practice water sports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing.
In the alleys of the old town in Marsala there are many shops, craft workshops, restaurants and cafes. There are also wine bars where you can taste the local Marsala wine in different varieties.
