The impressive Doric temple from the 5th century BC was never completed - it is not known to which deity it was to be consecrated. It was built by an ancient tribe of Elyms, who could have been descendants of refugees from Troy. Goethe was fascinated by the beauty and scale of the building, who described her in the "Italian Journey".
