The museum is located on an island that was bought in the nineteenth century by Joseph Whitaker. He promoted the program of excavations that lasted from 1906 to 1927. An antiquarian bookshop and museum was created in Whitaker's former home, which presents archaeological findings, such as the sculpture of the Young Man of Motya, artifacts from the necropolis, vases, amulets, weapons and much more.
