The building was built during the early Christian period, between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. The current building is the result of an extension in the Romanesque style between the 11th and 13th centuries. The baptistery includes the tomb of anti-Pope John XXIII (1360 / 70-1419) by the famous sculptors Donatella and Michelozzo.
