City Museum of the Ursino Castle

Local name: Museo Civico Castello Ursino

Located inside: Ursino Castle

The city museum is housed in a medieval castle, built in the 13th century to defend Sicily's east coast. Museum collections include part of Prince Biscari's collection and collections from the Benedictine monastery.

During the tour, you can see archaeological and historical collections. A large collection of weapons has been gathered here, including a 17th-century cannon, 16th-century German pistols and engraved 17th-century powder pouches. There is also an Old Roman collection of statues, fragments of Roman mosaics and plaster copies of sarcophagi. It is also worth paying attention to the collection of 2,000 bronze figurines from the Etruscan and Hellenistic eras, respectively. Among them there are, among others a marble relief depicting Demeter and Kora from 420 BC

The collections on the first and second floor include painting collections from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. They are mainly works by Italian artists, such as Michele Rocca and Michele Rapisardi.
