The triumphal arch was built in 1768 to celebrate the wedding of Ferdinand I Bourbon and Mary Carolina Habsburg-Lorraine. The portal was designed by the duo of architects Stefano Ittara and Francesco Battaglia. The historic building has become the honorary entrance to the city and a showcase of Catania.
