The park was established in 1999 in order to protect the area which is a wintering and nesting place for waterfowl. It is a wetland area covering approximately 1,600 hectares. Its uniqueness is the presence of both freshwater and saltwater reservoirs. From 1850 to the present, 230 species of birds have been registered in the Molentargius area.
