Tamar is a tourist area on the Dead Sea with the UNESCO-protected Masada fortress and several popular bathing areas.
The specificity of rest on the Dead Sea is different from the well-known Mediterranean resorts or the Red Sea. The villages and resorts are not located directly on the seashore. There are also not too many opportunities for relaxation outside of the designated beaches. Access to the shore is possible only in developed places. There are several of them in the Tamar area. They are equipped with showers and you can also rent deckchairs.
The most important attraction of this area is the fortress Masada standing on a rock. During the Jewish uprising, it was the last point of resistance against the Romans in 73 AD. The defenders led by Eleazar ben Jair, seeing that defeat was imminent, committed suicide along with their entire families.
Today Masada, with the Northern Palace, the Roman Ramp and walls located within it, are made available to tourists. You can go to the top by cable car or take the Snake's Path.
One of the most famous resorts in the Tamar area is Ein Gedi with its beach and sulfur bathing water. Its surroundings are part of the Ein Gedi National Park with picturesque wadis, waterfalls and streams.
