The fortress was built by Herod the Great atop a desert hill at an altitude of 739 m above sea level. Only the foundations and ruins of the palace and defensive walls have survived to modern times. The Arabic name of the fortress refers to the martyr's death of John the Baptist - his execution probably happened here.
