Mount of Olives is a hill located in the eastern part of Jerusalem, adjacent to the Old City. The name comes from the olive groves that once covered the slopes of the hill. The place was worshiped since early Christianity. At the foot of the mountain lies the Olive Garden, in which Jesus prayed, on the eve of his capture. On the top there are several important Christian shrines.
The Mount of Olives rises to 818 meters above sea level. In Davidic times, the hill was a place where Jews worshiped their God. Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, built the first Christian temple on the Mount of Olives. In 378 another church was built here, which was to be a memorial of the Ascension of Christ.
On the hill, tourists can visit several objects important for the Christian faith. These are primarily the church of Dominus flevit, the Orthodox church of Viri Galilei, the grotto of St. Pelagia and the Monastery of the Ascension. In addition, at the top of the mountain, there is also the basilica in Gatsemani and the rock of St. Thomas.
