Vík í Mýrdal is a small village situated at the foot of a cliff and one of Iceland's largest glaciers, Myrdalsjokull. In its vicinity there are black volcanic beaches and picturesque rock formations, and puffin colonies live on the coast.
The town is very popular among tourists because it is a good starting point for nearby attractions. From the village itself you can see the famous Reynisdrangar rocks protruding from the sea, and the perfect vantage point is located just above the buildings. Another beautiful place is Dyrholaey, a headland tipped with a rock arch with a lighthouse and a nesting place for numerous seabirds.
While exploring the area of Vík í Mýrdal, you can also come across a volcanic black beach and the Hálsanefshellir Cave, built of basalt rocks, located next to it. The town is also a good base for those wishing to hike the Myrdalsjokull glacier, and coming from Reykjavik, you will pass the two famous waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss within walking distance.
