Local name: Reynisfjara strönd
The beach is entirely covered with jet-black pebbles, sand and rocks. It was created as a result of volcano eruption, like most Icelandic beaches. It is surrounded by rock formations with fanciful shapes, including basalt columns known as Gardar.
