Mýrdalshreppur is a municipality on the Icelandic coast, the most important tourist destination of which is Vik i Myrdal. Here are, among others famous black beaches or the Solheimasandur plane wreck.

The commune is situated between the coast and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, the fourth largest in Iceland. You can walk on it with a guide and appropriate equipment. One of Iceland's most active volcanoes, Katla, is located under the canopy of snow and ice.

The main attractions of Mýrdalshreppur are by the sea. These include the remarkable Reynisfjara Black Beach with the basaltic Reynisfjara Rock Pillars. Hjörleifshöfði Cave can be found in the rocks surrounding the beach. Beside, the Reynisdrangar Rocks protrude from the sea. The scenic Dyrholaey Peninsula is also very famous.

The Solheimasandur plane wreck standing on the black beach is very popular. The American military Douglas Dakota C-117 made an emergency landing here in 1973. There was no way to start it or take it from this lonely place, so it was decided to leave it. Today, the decaying wreck, stripped of part of its plating, looks like a horror movie or a catastrophe.
