Vík í Mýrdal is the southernmost town in Iceland. It lies in a small bay surrounded by steep cliffs and is a good starting point for the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
The village has about 400 inhabitants and is one of the places where tourists visiting the southern part of Iceland. The first of their goals is the nearby Mýrdalsjökull glacier, under which the active Katla volcano is located.
The other attraction of the area are puffin colonies nesting on the cliffs. From Vík í Mýrdal you can go on a walking tour to watch these arctic birds.
The town itself is a housing estate of over 100 low houses sheltered by cliffs. At the shore, sharp teeth of single rocks protrude from the water, which once broke off from the mainland.
