Hvolsvöllur is a village located on the famous Icelandic road No. 1. It is a tourist center, located in the vicinity of the UNESCO Katla Geopark. There is also a volcano science center and the Niala Saga Museum.

Due to the numerous natural attractions dotting the surrounding area, Hvolsvöllur is an important tourist center on the south side of the island. There are three volcanoes nearby, Eyjafjallajökull, Grímsvötn and Katla. It is a popular trekking area. You can also see the Steinahellir Cave here, and an exceptionally beautiful but difficult trail leads to the Fimmvörðuháls Pass. From it you can admire areas cut by canyons formed in lava and streams flowing from glaciers. The entire area is picturesque and has a varied landscape.

When visiting Hvolsvöllur, you can come across modern buildings. However, there are two very attractive museums here. The first is the Niala Saga Museum, one of the most famous Icelandic epics. Its location is not accidental. It is in Hvolsvöllur that most of the key scenes of the story take place. The second major attraction of Hvolsvöllur is the Lava Center, a modern, interactive science center that presents volcano-related phenomena in an accessible way.
