Andrassy Street

Local name: Andrássy út

Andrássy út, or Andrássy Avenue is 2500 meters long and connects Elżbieta Square (Erzsébet tér) with Heroes Square (Hősök tere). Under the Andrássy Avenue runs the Millennium Underground Railway, which is the oldest metro in continental Europe. The alley with the Underground Railway and Heroes' Square has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2002.

Before the creation of the avenue, the narrower street ran this way in its current shape. In the second half of the nineteenth century, at the initiative of Gyula Andrássy, work began to transform it into a wide representative alley like the Parisian one.

Between 1871 and 1885, numerous neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau villas were built along Andrássy Avenue. Important facilities located on the avenue include: the Hungarian State Opera House, the Museum of Terror and the Academy of Music. Currently, Andrássy Avenue also has luxury brand stores such as Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Armani and Gucci.
