The port was founded in Byzantine times in the town of Rethymno on Crete. It flourished during the Venetian rule when it joined the main commercial ports of Crete. On the breakwater you can see a polygonal lighthouse called Egyptian. There are also several historic stone buildings, which in the past housed shipyards and warehouses.
