Mavrommati is a small town in the Peloponnese that houses the large archaeological site of Mesini. It is beautifully situated on the slope of the mountains, through which there are scenic hiking trails.
The village is now primarily a base for tourists coming to view one of the largest archaeological sites in the Peloponnese. In antiquity, there was a city here called Messina or Mesini. According to the legends, its inhabitants were to establish a colony in Sicily called Messina.
The archaeological site of Mesini is idyllically situated on the hillside. Within it there are, among others ancient stadium, Asclepieon, Eklesiastreon, Herron, Ancient theater, remains of houses and public buildings and tombs. There is also the still working Arsinoe Fountain and wonderful mosaics protected by a roof.
The Archaeological Museum of Ancient Mesini with items found during excavations operates at the site. Mesini delights not only with the size and condition of the building, but also with its beautiful location.
Some ancient structures are outside the actual excavation site. Some temples on the slopes of the mountains can be reached on footpaths. You can also see the Walls of Ancient Mesini and the Gate of Ancient Mesini.
