The gate was built at the Roman Forum in 11 BC as a monument dedicated to the patron of the city, Athena. It was funded by Julius Caesar and Octavian August. The ruins of the gate can be seen on the remains of an ancient square. They are considered the second most important monument that has been preserved in this place.
