The Painting Gallery is housed in a baroque palace in Sanssouci Park. The building was erected in 1755-1764 at the request of the Prussian King Frederick the Great. The gallery is the oldest royal museum to date in Germany. It belongs to the group of palaces and park complexes in Potsdam and Berlin inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.
