The building from 1770, modeled on the Roman triumphal arch, was designed by Carl von Gontard. It was created on the order of Frederick the Great, who wanted to emphasize the power of Prussia, the strongest state of the Reich. Originally, the gate was part of the city walls - it has been a free-standing building since the 19th century.
